Playing it Safe

Playing it Safe

Oh how I love this country, but oh, how it suppresses people – emotionally, culturally and spiritually…and then there is the physical.

Everything has to come with a warning. I was unaware of how litigious the society is here until I noticed that everything slightly challenging or outrageous has to be preceded by a warning: Do not try this at home.

Dear humans, life is a hazard in itself. Have you considered how fragile life is? How easily we can snuff it?

But to play it safe, wrapped in cotton wool, cossetted, manicured and protected, one does not experience life.

Children are no longer allowed to be just kids, to play in the dirt, eat worms and pee in the woods. God forbid they should even walk home from school. Yes, I know there are sexual predators everywhere, but believe me, they have always existed, but our parents warned us to take care and pretty much let us be. Climbing trees, cycling for miles without helmets, swimming in rivers: that is what childhood is about – not sitting inside and watching reality TV.

We were allowed to make mistakes, and suffered the consequences of careless actions. It molds the character and lets one experience life as the great adventure it is meant to be!

So let the children play – unstructured, without the expensive toys they really don’t need. They have imagination, they will figure it out.

Disclaimer:

I am cognisant of the fact that every child is special, has special needs and may not be healthy enough to play unsupervised. I am basing this on my own experience as a mother and do not dispute the fact that there are many children who cannot have these experiences.

On the Trumpiness of the Donald

I have frequently noticed the correlation between a person’s last name and their occupation.

This not unusual, for this is whence last names originated. What is more amusing, is the coincidence with the last name and the character of the person.

What does Trump mean?

Let’s look at the definition, taken from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary:

“Definition of TRUMP

1a :  trumpet

b chiefly Scottish :  jew’s harp

2:  a sound of or as if of trumpeting <the trump of doom>

Origin of TRUMP

Middle English trompe, from Anglo-French trumpe, of Germanic origin; akin to Old High German trumba, trumpa trumpet

First Known Use: 14th century

2trump

noun

Definition of TRUMP

1a :  a card of a suit any of whose cards will win over a card that is not of this suit —called also trump card
b :  the suit whose cards are trumps for a particular hand —often used in plural
2:  a decisive overriding factor or final resource —called also trump card
3:  a dependable and exemplary person”

Most of us know the meaning of “trump” from card games, but heck, did you see #3 in the list of definitions?
“A dependable and exemplary person”?!
Wow.
These are his words:
“When do we beat Mexico at the border? They’re laughing at us, at our stupidity. And now they are beating us economically. They are not our friend, believe me. … When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They are bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
Given his recent gaffe involving racist and derogatory remarks about Latinos, perhaps he should consider changing his name to one of the rhyming words, none of which are complimentary.
Donald, you’ve ruined it for yourself, your trumpeting Trumpiness has not triumphed.
I was really looking forward to more of the election circus, and I will really miss his big-foot-in-mouth disease.
Does watching the Republicans cringe count as a sport? Ach, what was I thinking. They don’t cringe, they just go to war.

The Enormous Advantage of Occupying Powers

The Enormous Advantage of Occupying Powers

Yes, I bet that headline got your attention, right?

We all hate war, and what it means but let’s take a quick look at some of the advantages an occupying power can bring to the table:

  • Genghis Khan, one of my all- time shaker- and-mover favorites, brought many new laws into existence, as well as paper moneyIMG_3236
  • The Romans civilized much of Europe, bringing awesome things like underfloor heating, bathrooms and mosaics.

  • The Crusades and the “Infidel Invasion” by the Turks brought much needed culinary, algebraic and fashion changes to Europe because they had become so uncivilized after the Romans withdrew they virtually went back to being barbarians, thanks to Christianity.

  • England’s occupation of India and other colonized countries gave the world cricket, tea and pith helmets…and of course, English as she is spoke. Too bad the U.S. didn’t like any of those, they would have been better off.
  • Hitler’s scientists developed rockets which formed the basis of many other frightening killing machines so dearly loved by the military.
  • American occupation of foreign nations….ooops, you got me there. But let’s not forget McDonalds, Elvis Presley, the A-bomb and teeth whitening! Awesome!!!  Image result for atom bomb

Yes of course I am being facetious. That’s how I roll, so don’t take this seriously and write me hate mail or put me under a fatwa. I am simply not worth the effort.
